I need to practice doing this a few times, but once I can do it rapidly in concise steps, I will make a YouTube video, which is the easiest way to see how the NOTION 4 and Reaper v4.73 configurations are done. I also discovered that it is possible to set an Instrument Track in Reaper to play the output of its VSTi virtual instrument or to show and record the MIDI, which is interesting, since in some scenarios you only want the generated audio, but in other scenarios you want to record the MIDI received from NOTION but there also is a way to do both (record the MIDI and the generated audio), which requires two tracks (one Instrument Track and one Audio Track), where the Instrument Track handles the MIDI, while the Audio Track handles the audio generated by the VSTi virtual instrument hosted by the respective Instrument Track that receives the MIDI from NOTION. Once the "virtual MIDI cable" was enabled in Reaper Preferences, there was activity and audio generated by the two VSTi virtual instruments that NOTION was playing via MIDI sent from the NOTION External MIDI staff.

On the Mac, the "virtual MIDI cable" is provided by the IAC Driver, which is part of Mac OS X, but by default in Reaper it was disabled, so I enabled it. Īfter a bit of pondering, I checked Reaper Preferences, and this is where I saw that the "virtual MIDI driver" was disabled.

There was audio coming from the single NOTION 4 Piano track, which was sent via a ReWire channel pair to yet another Instrument Track in Reaper, and its LED volume level meter was working nicely, but there was no activity on the two VSTi virtual instrument tracks in Reaper. I created the VSTi virtual instrument tracks in Reaper and assigned them to SampleTank 3 and Twin 2, but there was no activity on the LED volume level meters for the two tracks, which was a bit puzzling. In the experiment, the only thing which was not so obvious is that the "virtual MIDI cable" needs to be enabled for use as input in Reaper v4.73, which took a while to discover. There is an ongoing discussion about ReWire and latency, which is where I got the information about loopMIDI, and even though the focus is a bit different, I think that all the information on the Windows side is there, but the difference relative to this topic is that SampleTank 3 was not one of the VSTi virtual instruments used as an example, where instead the VSTi virtual instrument referenced was Kontakt 5 (Native Instruments), but (a) the principles are the same and (b) the only difference is that instead of selecting Kontakt 5, you will select Sample Tank 3.

You will need a "virtual MIDI cable" to do this, and loopMIDI is the one that works nicely with Reaper for Windows 7 and Windows 8, which is based on information in another thread, since I do not have a Windows machine at present.

SampleTank 3 and Twin 2 (FabFilter Software Instruments) were the VSTi virtual instruments in Reaper, and there was a NOTION 4 Piano in the NOTION Score, along with a single NOTION External MIDI staff which output MIDI to Reaper to play the two VSTi virtual instruments hosted in Reaper. I did an experiment and got it working with Reaper v4.73 as the ReWire 2 host controller and NOTION 4 as the ReWire 2 slave. I apologize for not replying sooner, but this is something you can do with Reaper and NOTION running in 64-bit mode-since SampleTank 3 is a 64-bit virtual instrument-and it is not so difficult to do this. I would be grateful if you have any more information. I understand the video but you say "although there is a way to use NOTION 4/5 External MIDI staves to control VSTi virtual instruments hosted in the DAW application" and that is what I want to do with Sampletank 3.
